HBANA Annual Meeting Minutes – September 29, 2019 – 2:30PM
1. Introductions – Present-members of the board: Barb Villa (President), Clark Brown (Vice-President), Rob Cronin (Secretary), and Omar Durant (Treasurer).
2. Speakers:
I. Albuquerque Police Department South East Command (SEC) Representative Laura Keuhn provided information on the following topics:
a. Crime Statistics for SE Command.
b. Two new police officers being assigned to the SEC.
c. Community Policing directed to businesses on Central in the HBANA area.
d. Staffing of the SEC relating to the rotation of police officers back into the district.
e. “Coffee with a Cop” program to occur on October 2, 2019, 7:30- 9:30 AM at Kap’s Coffee Shop and Diner Central Avenue, Albuquerque. Contact 505-256- 2050.
f. CrimeMapping.com – website related to crime statistics across Albuquerque.
II. Highland High School Marching Band Booster Vice President Courtney Nelson
a. She requested assistance with coordination of the upcoming 2019 Pageant of Bands at Wilson Stadium, 10/26/19 8:00am-530pm. This event, involves at least 30 New Mexico high school bands. She requested volunteer assistance between the hours of 1:30-4:30 PM & 3:30-6:30 PM.
b. The volunteer duties include: Coordinating the bands’ practice times, parking duty, and overseeing merchandise sales.
c. Contact Information: 505-903-1131.
III. APD Sgt. Lawrence Monte and Patrolman G. Gabaldon, provided the following information and answer questions.
a. Problem Response Team was described: Lt Gonzales leads a team of 5 officers focused on identifying and using resources in the community to solve the problems within the neighborhood.
b. Problems with needles found on resident properties. Needles can dealt with by either safely dropping them off at the SE Substation, any Fire Department, by calling 311 or using the ABQ1.com website.
c. Discussed issues with homeless individuals and how the APD is trying to provide assistance or have the individuals vacate locations where they set up camps. Reporting camping in alleyways or on private property, call 311, use the APD1.com website.
IV. Incumbent District 4 Albuquerque Public School Board member Barbara Peterson – spoke regarding her re-election campaign. She touched on the importance of the following issues:
a. APS’s desire to rebuild the system to provide better education
opportunities for the students.
b. Expanding professional development.
c. Extending the school day.
d. Dual language opportunities.
e. Increasing the social development through the arts.
V. Incumbent 6th District Councilor Pat Davis
a. Provided visuals related to accomplishments over the last year,
description of the bonds on the upcoming elections in November, and the
homelessness issue.
b. Discussed the new (200) police officers that have joined the force.
c. Described the decrease of the stolen vehicles reported in ABQ.
d. Discussed steps taken to hopefully decrease the number of violent
shootings in the city.
e. Informed of the City’s plan to go 100% clean energy by 2030.
f. Discussed his desire to go after problem properties and businesses.
VI. Candidate for 6th District City Council Gina Naomi Dennis
a. Described her family, political and work experience.
b. Described her goals related to the ART project, transportation needs of the city along Central.
c. Described ways to fund her plans to lower the crime and homeless issues.
3. HBANA Update – Barb provided update on current and future projects.
A. Neighborhood Cleanup: This year HBANA joined the HUB66 business organization and along with 125 individuals, including members of the APD and Bernalillo Co Sheriffs Department, the Highland HS Football Team, and local residents and business owners, cleaned up the area on Central/Copper/Silver from Washington to San Mateo. During the cleanup a large number of used needles were removed from properties and alleyways.
B. The issue of a Montana based construction firm is planning on building a 5-story apartment complex, title Santana Apartment Complex on Central and Adams. The complex would be comprised of 80% low income and 20% active addicts. Social workers would be working with residents.
4. Election of Officers: As Vice-President Clark Brown and Secretary Rob Cronin wished to step away from their positions for the upcoming year nominations were taken to fill their vacancies. A vote was taken with the following results: Barb Villa (President) Melissa Pacheco (Vice-President), Rebecca Habtour (Secretary) and Omar Durant (Treasurer).
7. Meeting concluded at 4:30 pm. Next monthly meeting scheduled for Thursday October 11, 2018 at 6:30 pm at the Manzano del Sol Village.
