Critical Information Regarding Request for Zoning Variance
to Sell Retail Alcohol at the Alon 7-11, Corner of Washington and Lomas
My name is Victor Lopez and I am the director of Learners Chess Academy, a local non-profit organization that teaches kids chess. We are located right across the street from the 7-11 and we are very much invested in stopping the sale of alcohol at that location.
I have been working with the Highland Business and Neighborhood Association and others on building a case/campaign against the 7-11's proposed zoning exemption to sell alcohol for off site consumption. We received a briefing from long time Albuquerque neighborhood activist and current County Treasurer, Nancy Bearce, who has been a part of numerous fights against the sale of alcohol within 500 feet of residential neighborhoods. She is also offering us ongoing support and consultation as we build this case.
We are building a case file for the March 17th hearing. We also need you to write letters and submit testimony that supports our case against the sale of alcohol at the 7-11 on Washington and Lomas.
We have made it very easy for you to submit your letters and become involved. Go to www.communityagainstinjury.com to fill out a form, compose your letter, and submit it to the office of the Zoning Hearing Examiner on this case.
Please do share this link with your neighbors and others who share our position on this issue.
A facilitated meeting has been scheduled regarding CABQ project #1011109, a ZHE application regarding property at 4510 Lomas Blvd NE (the Southwest Convenience Stores/7-11 application).
Meeting Date: Thursday, March 9, 2017
Time: 6:00 PM
Place: Mesa Verde Community Center Multipurpose Room, 7900 Marquette NE
The purpose of the meeting is to facilitate discussion between the applicant and neighbors about this project, to document known existing concerns, and to negotiate resolution of concerns if possible. A summary report of this meeting will be sent to the City of Albuquerque and to all meeting participants within 48 hours after the meeting. The facilitator and co-facilitator are neutral parties under contract with the City of Albuquerque.
HBANA NEIGHBORHOOD SIGN ON CENTRAL AVENUE
Your neighborhood association has a dedicated committee working with the City of Albuquerque and the County to have a large and attractive sign placed on Central Avenue which will welcome folks to the Highland District. There are many hoops through which we have to jump, but progress is being made. Keep an eye out for this sign which will most likely be near the Central and Monroe intersection.
